Halloween and All Saints' Day

We've just finished the season of spooks and spirits, and today, November 1st, is a day to honor saints as well as departed loved ones in many Catholic countries. (All Saints' Day)

We'd love to hear about any similar traditions you have, from the "Day of the Dead" celebrations, to All Saints Day, to practices honoring ancestors in your country.

In the spirit of Halloween, several classes have also been discussing common superstitions in their countries. Are black cats bad luck in your country? How about the number 13? Is breaking a mirror an ill omen in your country?

Please post a comment and help us learn more about your culture. **Be sure to write the NAME OF YOUR COUNTRY in your post so we know where the tradition comes from. Thanks!

    Day of the Dead

Guatemala: a Central American Country. We celebrate our loved ones who died and who are in the cemetery. We have honored to visit the graves with flowers. We family members have a meeting at which you eat a dish called (fiambre) cold meat unique from Guatemala cuisine, also the highlight of the day is to see the giant flying colors that are comets wandering through the air to stop being a transport and become the conexion between those who have already died and that sooner or later we have to. This is a very important day to celebrate.

  17. SAMIRA MANSOUR-HAFIFINovember 9, 2009 at 5:34 PM

My name is Samira, although I was born in France but I’m Algerian of origin; I will be talking about the Algerians’ tradition in the first of every November. It marks an anniversary for the heroes of Algeria. In November 1st 1954 the Algerian’s Front Liberation National movement declared a revolution against the French presence in Algeria. The French Army has been in Algeria since 1830; so this revolution wanted to put an end to a period of over a century of Colonization. So every November 1st we remember the sacrifice that the people of Algeria had to go through in order to free themselves from the miseries, injustice, oppression and human exploitation caused by the French colonization. It took seven years for the Algerian to succeed in their revolution; however, in these seven years many crimes were committed against the people in General and there were lots of civilian casualties and dead; it is estimated to be over one million and a half martyrs this is not to include the injured ones. That is why November 1st is a big day in Algeria.
